Edwin van der Sar hospitalised after suffering bleeding around his brain
Edwin van der Sar, the Netherlands goalkeeper, has been hospitalised after suffering bleeding around his brain.
His former football club Ajax broke the news in a Twitter post on Friday.
The Amsterdam-based club said the 52-year-old was in stable condition, without offering further details.
“On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition,” Ajax wrote.
“Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”
It was gathered that van der Sar was on vacation in Croatia when he became ill.
He played at clubs including Ajax, Juventus, and Manchester United. He appeared 130 times for the Netherlands and played 266 matches for Manchester United where he won the UEFA Champions League in 2008.
He retired at the age of 40.
